This site offers links to EBP research. There are several topics to choose from and each topic such as clinical lists several research studies.

Deciding which EBP is best.

You have to determine if the treatment will benefit the patient and is pertinent to the particular patient. Each patient is unique. Determine if the outcome of the research have been subject to agency guidelines such as US Agency for Health Research and Quality. The research should have also been conducted by a trusted source.

What is nursing research?

Researchers look at problems and use data and analysis to find ways to fix or prevent the problem. Research can benefit patients, educators and administrators. Everyday we find ways to make life easier, new medications and new treatments. This is all accomplished through research. Researchers must follow strict guidelines when conducting research studies. "Conducting research is not as simple as saying I want to do research. To conduct a scientific research investigation, the researcher must have adequate training and resources", (Beyea and slattery, 2006, p 7).

What is quality or performance improvement?

As stated by Beyea and Slattery (2006) quality improvement serves as a guide to improve nursing practices, not replace them. Quality improvement begins with data collection which is then analyzed, monitored, tested and evaluated. The difference between quality improvement and research is that for research studies people are sought out for the study, in quality improvement the study is done on patients already involved in the treatments being explored.

Key Steps in the Evidence Based Process

1. Framimg the question.
2. Finding the evidence.

One approach to framing the question is PICO, population, intervention, comparison and outcome. The  question should include all four of these criteria. This information can be found on the website http://www.asha.org/members/ebp/framing.htm
an example of framing the question would be: population: MI patients, Intervention: Cardiac rehab, Comparison: No cardiac rehab, Outcome: Patient will not experience another MI when returning to normal activities. "Do patients who recieve cardiac rehab as soon as possible after recovery more likely to return to their normal activities  better than those who do not recieve cardiac rehab? 

Who chooses which EBP to follow?

As stated by Metz, Espiritu and Moore (2007) there are criteria that must be followed for choosing what research studies to follow. The results of the studies must be tested before applyingg them in patient care. Also taken into consideration are how communities view new practices. Not everyone will view new practices as effective. Cultural considerations also must be considered.

evidence based nursing practice enables the nurse to ensure the lives of patients, families, communities and stakeholders better based on the results of nursing research. Nursing care is constantly evolving everyday with new research studies being done to ensure that we are up to date with the best possible nursing practices.
